Some apps are essential, and you use them every day. Everyone knows their names: Firefox, VLC, 7-Zip, and so on. However, there’s another class of app that gets less attention: the apps that are insanely useful to have in your back pocket on the rare occasions you need them. Here are 10 of our favorites.

10. Speccy

Maybe you’ve forgotten what kind of RAM you bought, or want a quick glance at your CPU’s temperature. Speccy scans your machine and gives you a complete rundown of everything, from model numbers to temperatures, fan speeds, S.M.A.R.T. status, and...well, pretty much anything else you can think of. It’s also available in portable form, so you don’t have to install anything—just stick it in a folder for when you really need it. For an alternative, check out HWiNFO.

9. Ultimate Windows Tweaker

When you first install Windows, you probably get everything set up just the way you like it, including all your favorite little Registry hacks and unsupported tweaks. You might even discover new ones later and try them out. Apps likeUltimate Windows Tweaker make this a lot easier, and they’re useful to keep around later if you start incorporating new things into your workflow. Its list of features is endless, allowing you to tweak the tiniest features in the taskbar, Windows Explorer, the lock screen, and anything else you could imagine. Download it once and keep it forever (and as always, back up before you start tweaking your system).

8. Stress Testing Utilities

Overclockers are probably very familiar with stress testing utilities likePrime95, LinX, and AIDA64. If you’ve overclocked your CPU, you should definitely keep these around, but they can be useful for non-overclockers too. When your processor is having issues, it can be difficult to diagnose. If some of your apps are crashing, a stress test like Prime95 can help you figure out whether your CPU is the problem (or whether it’s something else). Many folks also recommend giving a new computer a stress test to make sure there aren’t any problems. Most of these are also portable, so you can throw them in a folder and start them up when you need them.

7. MalwareBytes, VirusTotal, and AdwCleaner

We put these in the same category since they all protect you from unwanted programs, but they’re each useful in their own right. You probably have a good antivirus program running all the time, but no antivirus program catches everything—so it’s useful to have a secondary program to check once in awhile.MalwareBytes is great because it only works on-demand, which means it won’t conflict with your always-running antivirus tool. The VirusTotal Uploader, on the other hand, lets you scan any individual file with over 50 antivirus tools at once, so it’s great if you’ve downloaded something you think might be fishy. Lastly, if you’ve accidentally installed an annoying toolbar on your system that just won’t go away, AdwCleaner will help you get rid of it.

6. Magical Jelly Bean KeyFinder

Ever had to reinstall a program, but couldn’t find your product key? Magical Jelly Bean KeyFinder will search your PC for installed programs, and—if they have a product key—show them to you, so you can write it down and use it the next time you reinstall. Note: this one contains some toolbars and such upon installation, so be sure to use the custom installation to avoid the crapware.

5. Process Explorer

The Windows Task Manager can show you a lot of information about what programs are running, and usually it does what you need it to. But on the rare occasions you need more information—like if you’re trying to figure out which program is using your webcam, for example—you need Process Explorer. Process Explorer is one of the many Task Manager alternatives out there, offering information on what files are currently in use, what hardware, and what each program is doing. If the regular Task Manager isn’t giving you the info you need, Process Explorer will.

4. UNetbootin and YUMI

Even if you’re a diehard Windows user, Linux can be really useful from time to time—especially for troubleshooting. Traditionally, Linux distros and other troubleshooting tools come in the form of live CDs, but if you don’t have a CD drive, UNetbootin is a seriously handy tool. It can turn nearly any ISO into a bootable flash drive. Even better is YUMI, which lets you put multiple live CDs on one flash drive—meaning you can combine all your favorite rescue discs, Linux distros, and other tools and put them in your pocket.

3. Wireless Network Watcher (and Other Network Tools)

Need to see a list of all the computers on your network, along with IP addresses, MAC addresses, and other information? Whether you’re planning your network or think someone’s stealing your Wi-Fi, Wireless Network Watcher is a handy tool to have around. Despite its name, it works over wired networks, too. Of course, we also recommend checking out all of NirSoft’s network tools—which one you use depends on what you’re trying to troubleshoot, but they’re all pretty awesome.

2. WinDirStat

We all reach that fateful day at some point: when your computer tells you its running out of space. Not sure where it’s all going? WinDirStat will tell you. It scans all of your disks and shows you the biggest folders, which file types are taking up space, and more. If you’ve tried the usual things (like Disk Cleanup) and are still coming up short, WinDirStat is the next step in the disk cleaning process.

Let’s admit it: sometimes, even though we know it’s wrong, we all open the occasional sketchy program or file. We’re not judging, but if you’re going to do it, at least use protection. Enter Sandboxie, which lets you run programs independent of the rest of your system. That way they can’t infect, access, or otherwise interfere with your Windows installation. It’s also great for testing apps you aren’t sure of or running multiple instances of an app that won’t let you, so it’s fun for the whole family.

The web is a powerful resource that can easily help you learn new skills. You just have to know where to look. Sure, you can use Google, Yahoo, or Bing to search for sites where you can learn new skills, but I figured I’d save you some time.

Here are the top 40 sites I have personally used over the last few years when I want to learn something new.

Hack a Day – Hack a Day serves up fresh hacks (short tutorials) every day from around the web and one in-depth ‘How-To hack’ guide each week.
eHow – eHow is an online community dedicated to providing visitors the ability to research, share, and discuss solutions and tips for completing day-to-day tasks and projects.
Wired How-To Wiki – Collaborate with Wired editors and help them build their extensive library of projects, hacks, tricks and tips. Browse through hundreds how-to articles and then add to them, or start a new one.
MAKE Magazine – Brings the do-it-yourself (DIY) mindset to all of the technology in your life. MAKE is loaded with cool DIY projects that help you make the most of the technology you already own.
50 Things Everyone Should Know How To Do – While not totally comprehensive, here is a list of 50 things everyone should know how to do. It’s a great starting point to learn new skills.
wikiHow – A user based collaboration to build and share the world’s largest, highest quality how-to manual.
Lifehacker – An award-winning daily blog that features tips, shortcuts, and downloads that help you get things done smarter and more efficiently.
100+ Google Tricks That Will Save You Time – Today, knowing how to use Google effectively is a vital skill. This list links out to enough Google related resources to make you an elite Google hacker.

HowStuffWorks – Knowledge is power. While this site isn’t exactly geared to help you learn new skills, it contains so much useful information that you’re bound to learn a skill or two while you browse.
StumbleUpon – A collective set of recommendations from thousands of hours of searching by web users who share your interests. It’s basically a recommendation engine. Users add to this engine by providing their personal recommendations on what sites are worth your time. If you select topics and tags of interest like ‘Self-Improvement‘ and ‘DIY,’ you’ll be learning new skills in no time.
Work.com – An extensive directory of how-to guides for beginning entrepreneurs.
Howcast – Hosts professional how-to videos as well as how-to wiki tutorials. Howcast combines user ideas with the expertise of professional studio video to deliver what is nothing short of amazing, informative content.
VideoJug – The video content on this site covers a variety of topics including informative ‘How To’ and ‘Ask The Expert’ films that guide you step-by-step through everything and anything in life.

DIY Network – A go-to destination for rip-up, knock-out home improvement projects. The site offers expert answers the most sought-after questions regarding creative projects for DIY enthusiasts.
Scitable – A free science library and personal learning tool that currently concentrates on genetics, the study of evolution, variation, and the rich complexity of living organisms. The site also expects to expand into other topics of learning and education.
All Recipes – A complete guide to recipes and cooking tips. If you’d like to learn to be a better cook, this site is for you.
43 Folders – This site is more about inspiring you to follow-through with your goals than it is about learning new skills. But I think following-through with your goals is a skill. Most people never quite get there.
Dumb Little Man – Another awesome productivity and self-improvement blog hosting lots of useful information.
iTunes U – Hundreds of universities — including Stanford, Yale and MIT — distribute lectures, slide shows, PDFs, films, exhibit tours and audio books through iTunes U. The Science section alone contains content on topics including agriculture, astronomy, biology, chemistry, physics, ecology and geography.
American Sign Language Browser – Teach yourself sign language online.
BBC Languages – Teach yourself a new spoken language online.
Delicious Popular DIY – Lots of popular DIY articles bookmarked by users from all over the web.
Khan Academy – Over 1200 videos lessons covering everything from basic arithmetic and algebra to differential equations, physics, chemistry, biology and finance. Lot’s of educational material to help you learn new skills.
The Happiness Project – Learn the skills necessary to create happiness in your life.

Go to your profile page, then About, click Details About You, then under Name pronunciation, click “How do you say your name?.”

2. Disable the Facebook Messages “Seen” read receipt.

Those pesky read receipts RUIN lives. If you’re the type of person who doesn’t want to reply because you’re ~not in the mood~, then you should disable “Seen” receipts so people don’t know you’re ignoring them.

Download the Facebook Unseen Chrome extension or install Chat Undetected for Firefox and Internet Explorer. The downside? You won’t be able to see when people have read your messages.

3. Export all of your friends’ birthdays to Google Calendar, iCal, or Outlook.

Never miss a birthday AGAIN. Go to your Events page in the left column. Now look on the bottom right for two links: Upcoming Events and Birthdays. Copy one of those links.

Open Google Calendar, and click on the down arrow next to Other Calendars > Add by URL, paste the URL and … you’re done!

In iCal, go to Calendar > Subscribe and enter the URL.

In Outlook, go to Tools > Account Settings > Internet Calendars.

4. Access the Facebook Messages “Other” Inbox you didn’t know existed.

Did you know that you have two Facebook inboxes? There’s an Other inbox for messages from your fans, AKA randos/people who aren’t your friends. People who haven’t friended you must pay a nominal fee to send a message to your main inbox.

To view love e-letters from your latest admirers, click on the Messages icon and then select Other.

5. Look for that one post.

Facebook search is now really good at searching for posts that have been shared with you.

If you’re looking for something specific a friend has posted, type their name and a keyword, and the post will appear in the results.

6. Post GIFs to Facebook.

First, copy and paste the link to the GIF in your status bar. Then once a preview of the GIF appears, delete the link.

7. Hide your Facebook friends list.

Head to your Friends tab and all the way over on the right, click Edit Privacy. Change the Friends List setting to Only Me.

8. Share a post with everyone except for one person.

Before you complain about your boss, maybe hide him or her from the post. In the “Who should see this?” menu next to the Post button, select Custom and add the undesired friend to the Don’t share this with list.

9. Stop Facebook from auto-playing videos in your News Feed.

Turning off those auto-play videos will also save your data plan! Open the Facebook app > Settings > Videos and Photos > Auto-play and slide to disable Smart Auto-play, then select Use Wi-fi Only.

10. Know the Facebook Cover Photo size.

It’s not easy finding a photo big enough to be a cover photo. Make sure you find an image that fits these dimensions.

On desktop, the cover photo dimensions are 851 pixels wide x 315 pixels tall. On mobile, it’s 399px x 150px.

11. Stop those annoying game requests.

In the Facebook app, go to More > Settings > Notifications > Mobile Push and uncheck Application Requests. (You’re welcome)

12. If random friends keep bugging you, hide your online chat status.

On desktop, open the chat window, click on the gear icon in the upper right, clickAdvanced Settings. Then, Turn off chat for all friends or Turn off chat for only some friends and add friend lists or names of people you’d like to ignore.

13. Change your relationship status without causing any ~drama~.

Going from In a relationship to Single? Prevent ringing the alarms by going to theAbout tab > Family and relationships > changing your privacy settings to Only Me. Switch your status to Single and changes will not appear in the News Feed.

14. Use Facebook’s built-in read-it-later bookmark feature.

There are a ton of articles shared every day on Facebook, and there isn’t enough time in the day to click on all of them.

Tap or click the Share button and then Save Link. All of your bookmarked articles will appear on in the Saved tap in the left column (desktop) or in the More tab > Saved(mobile app).

15. Quickly send money via Messenger.

Ever noticed the little $ icon in Facebook Messenger chats? You can use it to pay Facebook friends up to $10,000 per month. The feature is similar PayPal, Venmo, or Square Cash. You can only pay via debit card, which you can enter in Facebook settings > Payments.

16. In the Facebook app, swipe left or right on a photo to throw quick filter on it.

After uploading a photo, you can just swipe on the image itself or press the Editbutton for more options. There are seven to choose from.

17. Download new Facebook photos you’re tagged in to a Dropbox folder.

Awesome for saving photos from a party or wedding! First create an account atIFTTT.com and then head to this page, where you’ll be prompted to connect your Facebook and Dropbox accounts. Once the accounts are verified, you can turn on the “recipe” and every photo you’re tagged in will be saved!

18. Create a “Look Back” video of your entire Facebook history.

Go to facebook.com/lookback to watch your entire Facebook life flash before your eyes. The video, which is automatically generated by the site, features your first moments, your most like posts, and a collage of your most recent happenings. Scroll down to edit to photos you want to be featured.

19. If you have an iPhone, the Paper app (Free, iOS) will change your Facebook life.

This experimental iPhone app is the best way to view your News Feed. Large photos from friends and pages are splashed across the top, while status updates appear at the bottom. Keep scrolling to view shared articles and trending stories from across the web. It’s a feast for your eyes, and so much better than the Facebook app. Unfortunately, it’s only available for iOS users right now.
